Michael Thomas Flynn was born December 24, 1958 and is a retired United States Army lieutenant general. He was born and raised in Middletown, Rhode Island. He is one of nine children.

Flynn attended the University of Rhode Island. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in management science in 1981 and additionally was a Distinguished Military Graduate of the ROTC.

Flynn’s education continued as he later earned a Master of Business Administration in Telecommunications from Golden Gate University. He also received a Master of Military Art and Science from the United States Army Command and General Staff College, and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.

Flynn’s military career included a vital role in shaping United States counterterrorism strategy and also dismantling insurgent networks in the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars.

Flynn was highly trusted and given many combat arms, conventional, and special operations senior intelligence assignments. He became the 18th director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in July of 2012.

In February of 2016, Flynn became a national security advisor to Donald Trump for his 2016 Presidential campaign. He was later sworn in on January 22, 2017 as the National Security Advisor. But he resigned on February 13, 2017.
